The cemetery is only an acre, but it is the remnant of a much wider settlement. In the 1830s, families began establishing themselves around Batchelors Grove, southwest of Chicago, near the timber and prairie land that supported farms. The grove appears on early maps, and its post office changed names more than once as the surrounding townships took shape. The cemetery preserves one small part of that community.
Its name has its own uncertainty. One account says a group of unmarried men gave the settlement its name in the 1830s. Historical maps and records, however, show versions of “Batchelor” already in use, and local historian Brad Bettenhausen notes that the name may instead derive from the Batchelder family. The variation matters because the place was not originally a ghost-story destination; it was a living rural settlement whose name outlasted much of its built landscape.
