In 1820, the U.S. Army established a post on the west bank of the Missouri River at a site Lewis and Clark had noted as suitable for a fort. Fort Atkinson became one of the earliest permanent U.S. military installations west of the river. It stood at the edge of a rapidly expanding fur trade, where military authority, commercial interests, and Indigenous nations met on unequal terms.
