Goldfield’s most imposing hotel rose while the town was still expanding. Gold had been discovered nearby in 1902, and by 1904 the rush had become a sustained mining boom. Nevada’s State Historic Preservation Office records a peak population of 20,000 and more than $86 million in precious-metal production between 1903 and 1940. In this new city, the Goldfield Hotel announced prosperity in granite, brick, tile, balconies, and electric service.

Construction began in April 1907 under the Hayes–Monette Syndicate, according to the Goldfield Historical Society. The four-story hotel was designed by Reno architects Holesworth and Curtis. Its lower level used gray granite from Rocklin, California, while the upper stories were brick. The U-shaped plan placed public rooms on the main floor and guest rooms above. The society says it operated through the 1940s, making the building a center of the town’s boom years as well as a durable landmark after mining receded.
