The Habersham House was already old when Savannah began calling it the Pink House. James Habersham Jr., a merchant and planter, began building the residence in 1771, during the final years of colonial rule. Its Georgian brick walls were covered with stucco, a finish that has helped give the building its distinctive appearance. The oft-repeated account that brick repeatedly bled through whitewash until the family surrendered and painted it pink is a later explanation, not a firmly documented origin story.
