When John White returned to Roanoke Island in August 1590, he found the settlement empty. The colonists had left two marks: “CRO” cut into a tree and “CROATOAN” carved into a post. There were no signs of a hurried departure. White understood the word as a possible destination, but a storm drove his ship away before he could search the nearby island. He never saw his family or the settlers again.
