Tolomato’s story begins before its gravestones. The cemetery occupies ground associated with a Franciscan mission village for Guale people, whose communities were drawn into the Spanish colonial mission system. The mission’s history was shaped by displacement, conflict, and repeated upheaval; the cemetery is one layer of that larger history, not a complete record of it.

In 1777, Catholic settlers known as Minorcans arrived in St. Augustine after the failure of the New Smyrna colony. Their priest, Pedro Camps, secured use of the former mission ground for burials. When Spain returned to Florida in 1784, Tolomato became the Catholic parish cemetery. It served that role until 1884, when the city closed cemeteries within its limits amid concerns about disease and public health.
