The Unitarian churchyard in Charleston has been keeping its own record since the eighteenth century. A volume published by Caroline Howard Gilman in 1860 transcribed inscriptions from the cemetery and church, preserving names and dates from 1777 through 1860. That documentary trail sits beside the graveyard’s living landscape: paths and old markers framed by trees and plants, in the middle of a city whose churches and burial grounds are part of its everyday streetscape.
