The carriage house behind 20 South Battery has a history distinct from the grand residence in front of it. The main house was built around 1843 for merchant Samuel N. Stevens. In 1870, Colonel Richard Lathers hired Charleston architect John Henry Devereux to remake the property in the Second Empire style, adding a mansard roof and a ballroom that served as a meeting room. The house’s changing silhouette records how one Battery address was repeatedly reshaped to suit new owners and uses.
