The Bell Witch Cave sits near Adams, Tennessee, but the cave did not begin the Bell Witch story. The haunting is associated with the Bell family farm and with reports said to have taken place between about 1817 and 1821. The family’s experiences reached print much later: an 1886 county history offered an early brief account, while Martin Van Buren Ingram’s 1894 book supplied the fullest narrative most readers recognize today.

In that account, the Bell family hears voices and unexplained sounds, and the disturbances are said to center on John Bell and his daughter Betsy. The story grew through retellings, with details changing as it moved from local memory into books, stage performances, and popular culture. The Tennessee Encyclopedia recounts the legend while placing it in its historical setting; the Tennessee State Library and Archives likewise notes that early sources are uncertain and that later books differ in detail.
