On November 30, 1864, fighting reached the Carter family farm in Franklin, Tennessee. The house became a Union command post as Confederate forces attacked the Federal line. The battle lasted only hours, but it left the family home and nearby outbuildings riddled with bullets and shrapnel. More than a thousand marks remain visible on two of the surviving structures, turning ordinary walls into a record of the battle’s violence.

The Carters and others took shelter in the basement while the fighting moved across the property. Outside, soldiers charged repeatedly through fields and along the Columbia Pike. The Battle of Franklin became one of the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War’s western theater, with thousands killed, wounded, or captured. The house’s survival is inseparable from the lives interrupted around it.
