Fort Gibson began in 1824 at the meeting of the Grand and Arkansas rivers, a strategic point in what the United States called its western frontier. The Army established the post to assert federal power in the region and to manage conflict between the Osage and Cherokee. It first bore the name Cantonment Gibson; in 1832, after Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, it became Fort Gibson. The new name accompanied a larger role in the federal removal program.
