When the Missouri State Penitentiary opened in Jefferson City in 1836, it became the first state prison west of the Mississippi River. The institution grew alongside the young state and its capital. Its registers, preserved by the Missouri State Archives, contain names, sentences, release dates, and fragments of lives that official labels rarely capture. The surviving record makes the prison more than a set of walls: it is an archive of how Missouri punished and confined people across generations.
