Frangokastello is a rectangular Venetian fortress on the south coast of Crete, set between a broad plain and the Libyan Sea. Its corner towers and surviving coat of arms make its origin visible, while later additions belong to the Ottoman period. The castle is best known for the Drosoulites—“dew-men”—shadows said to appear near dawn in May, moving across the plain toward the sea. Local tradition connects them with the fighters killed in the battle of 17 May 1828.
