Bourtzi is a small Venetian sea fortress on the islet of Agioi Theodoroi at the entrance to Nafplio’s harbour. Construction began in 1471 under architect Antonio Gambello, and the island stronghold helped defend the town from approaches by sea. Its name comes from the Ottoman period, when “bourtzi” was used for a tower or fortress. Across several centuries, Venetians, Ottomans, and Greeks repaired and modified its walls.
