Grand Hotel opened on Mackinac Island in 1887, when railroads and steamships were making summer travel more accessible to people from the Midwest. The hotel was promoted as a destination in itself: a large resort where guests could spend the season beside the Straits of Mackinac. Its broad porch, built to face the water and catch the breeze, turned arrival into part of the experience.

The hotel was developed by a company formed by railroad and steamship interests. Their transport networks could bring visitors to the island, and the resort gave those routes a place to deliver them. Mackinac Island’s growing identity as a summer retreat grew alongside the hotel, drawing travelers who came for fresh air, lake views, and a slower pace than the cities they left behind. The great porch became its signature, but the building’s scale also reflected a new industry in leisure.
