In 1894, a new house on Woodward Avenue announced the wealth that lumber had brought to Detroit. David Whitney Jr., one of Michigan’s richest men, commissioned the mansion with his wife Sara. Its rose-colored stone, Tiffany glass, fifty-two rooms, and residential elevator made it a conspicuous presence on a street filling with grand homes. The elevator was the first installed in a Detroit residence, a practical piece of technology inside a display of extraordinary means.
