Hotel Galvez opened in 1911, on the seawall built after the hurricane that devastated Galveston in 1900. The timing gives the hotel a place in the island’s recovery, though it was not a shelter built during the catastrophe. By the time it welcomed its first guests, Galveston had raised sections of the city and was trying to rebuild confidence in a shoreline that had proved vulnerable.
The storm killed thousands; estimates vary, and the National Weather Service describes it as the deadliest natural disaster in United States history. In the years after, engineers and workers changed the coast through a seawall and grade-raising project. These measures reduced risk in protected areas but could not remove the threat of hurricanes. The Galvez opened as a different kind of response: a grand hotel that treated the beachfront as a place for leisure and investment again.
