Oakwood Cemetery began as Austin’s City Cemetery in 1839, when the new capital was still a small settlement. Over time, the burial ground grew with the city. Its graves record the lives of politicians and public figures, but also of people whose names appear only faintly—or not at all—in surviving records. The cemetery is a place to encounter Austin’s growth through the people who lived and died alongside it.
The ground was divided by race and class. A section now interpreted as the Historic Colored Grounds contains more than three acres of burials, many unmarked. City researchers note that old records often list people without full names. This absence is not evidence that these lives mattered less; it reflects who had the power to decide whose deaths were recorded and whose graves received a lasting marker.
