Lyndhurst began as a country house designed to surprise. In 1838, former New York mayor William Paulding hired architect Alexander Jackson Davis to build a Gothic Revival villa above the Hudson River. Its pointed arches and asymmetrical silhouette departed from the classical styles more common in the young republic. The design looked toward medieval Europe, but the estate’s story would be shaped by successive American owners and the changing meaning of wealth.
