Catholina Lambert named his new hilltop home Belle Vista, a name that suited its view over Paterson. Built on Garret Mountain in 1892–93, the castellated residence announced the success of an English immigrant who had made his fortune in the city’s silk industry. Its towers and stone walls were designed as a private home, but the house also displayed the wealth and cultural ambitions that industrial fortunes could produce in late nineteenth-century Paterson.

Lambert filled the residence with an extensive collection of American and European paintings and sculpture. He continued to enlarge it: a tower and summerhouse followed in 1896, along with a dedicated art gallery. The Passaic County Historical Society’s account of the building’s opening in 1893 describes hundreds of invited guests arriving at a home that local observers already called a castle. The architecture made the residence visible across the city, while its collection brought art and social life into a family house above the mills.
