In 1855, William and Mary Menger opened a boardinghouse and brewery on the edge of Alamo Plaza, where San Antonio’s commercial center was beginning to spread. Their first enterprise was practical: lodging and beer for a growing town whose visitors included merchants, travelers, and people moving cattle through South Texas. The boardinghouse became popular enough that, four years later, the Mengers replaced it with a two-story stone hotel. A business founded to serve transient customers became one of the city’s most enduring public buildings.

The hotel stood beside the former mission and military compound known as the Alamo. That proximity placed it at a crossroads of memory and commerce. The Alamo was already associated with the 1836 battle, while the Menger welcomed people who came to San Antonio for work, politics, travel, or entertainment. The hotel’s brewery and patio garden helped make it a gathering place. The Texas Historical Commission notes that politics and business were discussed there; cattlemen traveling through the city also lodged in its rooms during the great trail-driving era.
