Before it became one of New Orleans’s best-known cemeteries, this ground was built for speed. A racetrack opened on Metairie Ridge in the 1830s, and the Metairie Jockey Club organized formal racing there by 1848. The long oval course shaped the land so thoroughly that its outline remains visible in the cemetery’s principal avenue.
