By the early nineteenth century, New Orleans had outgrown its first St. Louis burial ground. The Catholic cemetery now known as St. Louis No. 2 opened in 1823, extending the city’s burial landscape beyond the original cemetery near the French Quarter. Its three squares hold generations of families, religious communities, and associations whose records help trace the city’s changing population.
