The Lemp Mansion’s best-known stories begin with a family’s losses. The building’s fuller history begins earlier, with lager beer, limestone caves, and an expanding St. Louis industry.

John Adam Lemp arrived from Germany in 1838 and first worked as a grocer. He also brewed lager, a beer that benefited from cool storage. St. Louis’s natural caves offered a way to keep it at a relatively stable temperature before mechanical refrigeration was widely available. In 1840, Lemp established a brewery, and the business grew under his son William J. Lemp into one of the city’s major brewing enterprises.

By the late nineteenth century, the family’s wealth had taken architectural form. The mansion became a residence for William and his family near the brewery complex. The house and the industrial plant were parts of the same enterprise: one represented private domestic life, the other the production and distribution system that had made the family prominent.
