The long wings at Weston began with an idea about kindness.
A hospital, its designers believed, could help people through the way it was built. Sunlight would reach the rooms. Fresh air would pass through them. Space and an orderly environment would become part of treatment.
Construction began in 1858. The first patients arrived in 1864, while work on the immense stone building continued. Its design followed the Kirkbride Plan, which placed considerable faith in the therapeutic possibilities of architecture.
It was intended for approximately 250 patients.
By the 1950s, it held more than 2,400.
