In 1884, Walt Whitman used royalties from Leaves of Grass to buy a modest, six-room house on Mickle Street in Camden. It was the only home he owned. By then he had lived in the city for years and was recovering from a disabling stroke. The purchase gave him a permanent address for the final eight years of his life, and the house became the setting for the last phase of a book he had been revising for decades.

Whitman continued to work in Camden, returning to poems and manuscripts and preparing new versions of Leaves of Grass. The 1891–92 edition, often called the deathbed edition, was the final version he oversaw. The house therefore holds a particular place in his literary history: it was not where the work began, but where he kept shaping it near the end of his life. Visitors came to see him there, and his friend Horace Traubel later recorded conversations from these years, preserving a close view of Whitman’s daily intellectual life.
