The name is the first thing to correct. Aztec Ruins was built by Ancestral Pueblo people, not by the Aztec civilization of Mexico. European American settlers gave the site its misleading name before archaeology established who built it. Today the name remains on the monument, alongside evidence of a community that shaped the Animas River valley for roughly two centuries.
