Margaret Brown was reading when the Titanic struck the iceberg. In the account she wrote for the Newport Herald in 1912, the impact interrupted a book she had wanted to finish. She went into the corridor, found passengers trying to understand what had happened, and returned to her reading before the emergency became unmistakable. Her recollection carries the disaster back into ordinary life: a lamp beside a bed, a book still open, and a passenger who did not yet know the shape her evening would take.

That passenger had already built a substantial life. Margaret and James Joseph Brown made Denver's 1340 Pennsylvania Street their home in 1894, after his work at the Little Johnny mine helped bring the family a fortune. Electricity, plumbing, central heating, and a telephone placed their house firmly in the modern world. Travel brought objects and ideas home with them. This was a residence for a family with money and widening horizons, years before an Atlantic crossing made its owner famous.
