Near the lower Acheron in Epirus, the site known as the Nekromanteion has long been associated with ancient consultation of the dead. Greek tradition placed the entrance to Hades in this river landscape, where the Acheron and its tributaries meet wetlands and rocky slopes. Ancient literary accounts describe people seeking messages from the dead at an oracle. The name and setting have made the archaeological site a powerful focus for stories about the boundary between the living and the underworld.
