The Capitol Theatre began as the Orpheum, a vaudeville house that opened in Salt Lake City in 1913. Its stage hosted touring acts before movies joined the program in 1923. In 1927, new owners changed the name to Capitol Theatre. The building's role shifted again in 1975, when Salt Lake County renovated it as a performing arts center. Each change kept the room in public use while changing what audiences came to see.

A fire brought a much harder turn. On July 4, 1949, flames broke out during a matinee, and 17-year-old usher Richard L. Duffin died. Later accounts often misstate the year or use the name “George,” but Salt Lake Tribune reporting identifies Duffin and the 1949 fire. The historical record deserves to stand on its own, without turning the young employee's death into a device for a ghost story.
