On April 19, 1927, Boise’s new Egyptian Theatre opened with the silent film Don Juan. Its decoration drew on the Egypt-inspired design fashion that followed the 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, but the theatre was also a product of a very modern ambition: to make a night at the movies feel like an event. Painted ornament, Egyptian motifs, and a large auditorium turned commercial entertainment into a civic spectacle.
