Many immigrants who reached Ellis Island never saw the island’s south side. After a first inspection in the main processing building, people suspected of illness could be sent to the hospital complex for further examination and treatment. The Public Health Service built the hospitals in stages: the general hospital opened in 1902, followed by contagious-disease wards in the years that followed.
