Enisala Fortress rises on a limestone ridge above a broad expanse of lakes and wetlands in Dobruja. It is one of the few medieval fortresses in the region whose remains still make its defensive plan easy to read. The polygonal enclosure follows the shape of the hill, and its towers look out across a landscape that once connected inland settlements to the Black Sea. A strong position here meant watching movement through water routes and along the low ground.
