The Joshua Ward House occupies ground with a history older than its brick walls. Before merchant Joshua Ward built his Federal-style home in the 1780s, the property held the house of George Corwin, Essex County’s high sheriff during the Salem witch trials. Corwin carried out arrests and seizures ordered by the court. His former home disappeared, but the site kept an association with the machinery of the 1692 prosecutions.
