Lagopesole Castle stands on a hill above the Vitalba valley in Basilicata. Emperor Frederick II chose the site for a hunting and summer residence, and the Italian Ministry of Culture dates his construction campaign to 1242. A document from the early 1240s confirms that much of the building was usable before the emperor’s death. The castle combines residential spaces with a military section, probably built over an earlier Norman structure. Its compact massing reflects both courtly life and the need to control a strategic landscape.
