Otranto Cathedral was built between 1080 and 1088 over earlier Messapian, Roman, and early Christian remains. Its architecture combines Byzantine, early Christian, and Romanesque elements, reflecting a port city shaped by contact across the Adriatic. The most striking feature is the enormous floor mosaic, commissioned by Archbishop Gionata and made by the priest Pantaleone between 1163 and 1165. Its branching tree gathers biblical episodes, allegorical figures, and scenes from medieval thought into one continuous image.

The cathedral’s history changed dramatically in 1480, when Ottoman forces captured Otranto after a siege. The city was retaken the following year. The church’s eastern apse was enlarged in 1482 to create a chapel for the remains of those killed after refusing to renounce their Christian faith. The Archdiocese of Otranto identifies the cathedral as the place where the relics of the martyrs are venerated. Their presence turns the building into a site of religious memory as well as an architectural monument.
