Fumone Castle

Fumone Castle commands a high point above the Sacco Valley, where its position once made it useful as a watch post and signal station. The name is associated with the smoke signals that could be passed from one ridge to another. From this height, a warning could travel across the surrounding valleys toward Rome. For centuries the fortress belonged to the papacy and served as an important stronghold in southern Lazio before becoming the country residence of the Longhi de Paolis family, who still preserve it.
