On 12 December 1901, Guglielmo Marconi received a wireless signal on Signal Hill in St. John’s. The faint Morse-code letter S had been transmitted from Poldhu, Cornwall, and its arrival across the Atlantic marked a turning point in communications history. The experiment took place before Cabot Tower was complete; the tower was built between 1897 and 1900 as part of the hill’s long role in signalling ships entering the harbour.
