Genoa’s Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno opened to the public on 1 January 1851, while much of the complex was still unfinished. Its design grew from nineteenth-century plans for a large civic cemetery beyond the densely built city. The hillside setting, long galleries, and monumental entrance created a place where burial, sculpture, and landscape could be experienced together. Over time, families commissioned elaborate tombs that turned private grief into public works of art.
Staglieno is known for marble figures that appear caught in ordinary gestures: a widow leaning toward a grave, an angel guarding a doorway, a family gathered around a bed. The sculptures register changing styles and social ambitions, and they also document how Genoa’s residents chose to represent mourning. The cemetery is not a museum detached from burial; it remains a working place of remembrance, administered by the city.
