Poppi Castle rises above the Casentino Valley in Tuscany, its position chosen so the Counts Guidi could see the village and the main roads crossing their territory. The first documentary reference dates to 1169, though simpler fortified structures may have occupied the hill earlier. Between the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, Count Simone da Battifolle oversaw the castle’s transformation into a powerful residence whose compact profile remains recognizable today.

The castle was both a military stronghold and an announcement of feudal authority. Its high tower and enclosed courtyard gave the Guidi a defensible base, while its architecture made their control visible across the valley. In 1289, the nearby Battle of Campaldino brought the wider landscape into one of the major conflicts between Florence and Arezzo. Dante Alighieri fought on the Florentine side as a young man; the battle later became part of the cultural memory associated with Casentino.
