Montebello Castle overlooks the Marecchia and Uso valleys from a ridge in the Rimini hinterland. Its long history includes changing medieval fortifications, noble residences, and later restoration. Today, a guided visit moves through the rooms, furnishings, and defensive structure of the castle, while the legend of Azzurrina is told alongside the architectural history.
The story says that a girl named Guendalina, born with albinism and nicknamed Azzurrina, disappeared inside the castle during a storm on the summer solstice in 1375. Some versions say she was playing with a ball near an underground passage when she vanished. The castle’s own account presents this as a legend. No contemporary record confirms the girl’s identity, the disappearance, or the details that later versions supply.
