The Princely Fortress of Suceava was built near the medieval town at the end of the fourteenth century. For almost two hundred years it served as a principal residence of Moldavia’s rulers. Its position above the town and its system of defensive walls made it both a seat of government and a stronghold in a region where political borders and alliances could shift. Under Stephen the Great and later rulers, the complex was expanded and adapted to changing military needs.

The fortress’s history is not only a sequence of battles. Its courtyards and chambers belonged to a working court, where decisions, administration, and daily routines took place. The surviving structure includes a central castle protected by outer defensive works. Visitors can follow the scale of the complex through its restored walls, towers, and passages, but the original interiors have been altered by centuries of damage and repair.
