Biertan’s church became the center of a fortified village and the seat of Transylvania’s Saxon Lutheran bishops. The settlement’s first documentary mention dates to 1283; the church is documented by 1402, and construction of the late-Gothic church in its present form began around 1500. By 1486, a royal charter had exempted some able-bodied men from military service so they could remain to defend the church-fortress.

The defensive complex grew around a building used for worship and community life. Biertan has three successive enclosures, with walls, towers, and a bastion. The church’s sacristy door, made in 1515, holds a complicated lock operated by a key and a handle that moves several bolts. In a siege, valuables could be secured inside the sacristy. The door is an ingenious piece of craft, but it also reflects the practical purpose of the fortified church: protecting a community’s religious objects and shared property.
