Lake View Cemetery

When Lake View Cemetery was established in 1869, Cleveland’s edge lay several miles to the west. The hilly landscape seemed distant from the city’s crowded center, but its open grounds and views made it a destination in their own right. The cemetery’s founders imagined a landscaped place where residents could remember the dead and spend time outdoors. As Cleveland grew, the cemetery became part of the city rather than a retreat beyond it.
