The house at 4308 Franklin Boulevard was built in 1881 for Hannes Tiedemann, a German-born banker whose family lived in one of Cleveland’s prominent west-side neighborhoods. Its towers, stonework, and elaborate Victorian details made it stand apart from the surrounding homes. The Tiedemann House was a domestic statement of wealth and status, designed for a family rather than for the supernatural reputation that would later attach to it.

The Tiedemanns experienced multiple deaths in their family, including the loss of children. Such losses were tragically common in the nineteenth century, when childhood mortality was high, but later stories transformed grief into mystery. As the house changed owners, its history became entangled with claims of a murdered niece, a hidden room of bones, secret passages, and ghosts. The details vary, and the most sensational accounts are not supported by the historical record.
