Historic England describes it as a late-medieval inn remodelled in the sixteenth century, with limestone rubble, timber framing, and a complex plan shaped by centuries of alteration. Deeds survive from the fourteenth century, and records connect the property with wool merchants. Its listed status comes from architectural and historic interest, not from its later reputation as a haunted house.
