The Skirrid Inn sits beneath Skirrid Fawr in Monmouthshire and is promoted as one of Wales’s oldest pubs. Its traditional story says the building once served as a courthouse and that condemned people were hanged from a beam over the stairs. The inn and local guides repeat the tale, but the claimed executions and the rope mark have not been established by reliable historical records. The present building is generally dated much later than the inn’s claimed 900-year history.
