Warwick Castle began as a motte-and-bailey fortress ordered by William the Conqueror in 1068. Its stone walls and towers grew over generations, especially under the Beauchamp family, whose power made Warwick one of England’s most important medieval castles. The site also witnessed political violence: in 1312, Piers Gaveston was held here before being executed nearby.
