Tutbury Castle’s history stretches from the Norman period to its role as a royal stronghold. William the Conqueror granted the castle to Henry de Ferrers, and the site later became an important centre of the Duchy of Lancaster. John of Gaunt rebuilt it in the fourteenth century. Much of what remains today is fragmentary: towers, walls, earthworks, and later structures set above the Dove valley.
