Bamburgh Castle rises from a dark whinstone outcrop above the Northumberland coast. The site’s royal and military history reaches back to the early Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Bernicia, when a timber stronghold was associated with Ida, its first recorded king. The castle changed hands and form over centuries. During the Wars of the Roses, artillery battered it in the 1464 siege, making the fortress a landmark in the changing technology of warfare.
